Polaroid Image Transfer
I have always had a creative approach toward photography. Photography is not merely a means to record an image it is an art form! Alternative processes such as Gum Bicromate and Cyanotype have been joined by newer alternative processes including Polaroid Image Transfer and Digital Imaging which, I am exhibiting here. These processes lend new means of artistic expression to the photographic image. When creating a Polaroid Image Transfer I began with an original image shot on transparency film. I then move to the darkroom where, using an enlarger, the transparency is projected onto a piece of Polaroid instant print film exposing the film to the image. The film is then partially developed and the actual film emulsion is transferred via contact to a piece of watercolor paper. The use of watercolor paper imparts a fresco like appearance to the image. The transfer process is a bit tricky, sometimes the film emulsion doesn’t transfer completely, usually taking many attempts to get a result I am pleased with. Polaroid Image Transfers are easily recognizable by the distinctive image borders left by the process. Interesting variances between image transfers make each a unique original. I use Polaroid type 669 film so the originals are about 3.25” by 4.25”. I then scan the image transfer into the computer so it can be enlarged and prints can be made. The final output is in the form of a Fine Art giclée print. I hope you enjoy experiencing my work as much as I have enjoyed creating it!
